If vegetarian diets are so much healthier, why do they have to depend on vitamins?

I have been a lacto-vegetarian for over 12 years. Sorry no extra vitamin intake here.

I never heard about them depending on vitamins, but I think vitamins are beneficial to any diets. One cup of oatmeal for example has three times more iron than a three ounce serving of chuck beef (lean). Green leafy vegetables and beans have more protein than meat, never mind spirulina.
