Americans are dining in restaurants more than ever, and with eateries trying to hold the line on prices, it's not necessarily a big money-saver to buy your own groceries.

By the time he's driven to the farmers market, bought the organic veggies and spent an hour cooking a meal for himself and his wife, Mark Chernesky figures he's spent $30.

That's why recently, after fighting rush hour, the Atlanta multimedia coordinator dashed in to Figo, a pasta place, for hand-stuffed ravioli slathered with puttanesca sauce. "I'll get out of here for $17 plus tip," he said.

On the other hand, did they serve hem an organic veggie meal from the farmers' market? If he ran to Safeway, picked up a pound of pasta, a jar of Ragu and a pound of ground beef, he'd have four meals, spend about fifteen minutes making it, and have spent about six bucks--$1.50 a meal. What's this guy, some kind of idiot?

Oh, gee, I spent $35 on an organic filet mignon, a baked potato with all the works and a half pound of asparagus--and I only had to make a 75 mile drive to buy the stuff... it was so much cheaper getting a double hamburger and a Coke at McDonalds next to my apartment building for $2, that proves it's cheaper to eat out!!

I guess it depends on how many are eating out with you and the type of places you eat out at. But eating out alot can make you gain weight. When I slowed it down (eating out) the weight dropped- just a little info ;];]

As to which is cheaper, it depends on where a person lives I suppose. Where I live, I would have to drive my car to go out to eat, with the rising costs of gasoline, that is not cost affective for me.

I like to cook, so I normally cook larger meals, to freeze. Once cooked, chili, roast beef, chicken and many other foods can be packaged and frozen for more meals. Then all a person has to do is to thaw the food, cook some veggies, and make a salad.

I go to town once a week to bowl, on my way home I stop and buy fresh produce. For me, I save money by not eating out.

I am cooking some homemade chicken noodle soup right now!:)

      Thanks engineer!

I recently added up my grocery bills for the month and found out that I spend about $14 a day on food. I have been on a diet and not eating out much so that figure is pretty accurate. That's not too bad when you consider that I have been buying some pretty healthy foods and gourmet items in an upscale area. I definitely think it would cost me far more if I ate out a lot. I certainly wouldn't be eating my dinners in cheap fast food joints if I ate out so it would definitely cost me more. Even at the diners around here a dinner entree costs at least $10 a plate or more. I personally don't know how anyone could say eating out is cheaper, unless they're buying a ton of expensive stuff in the supermarket and eat out in $7.00 a person all-you-can-eat buffets. If you really know how to cook and get good food values like I do you would know that you don't have to spend a fortune in the supermarket.

At our house we still consider eating out to be a treat, there ae still 4 of us here so I think it is cheaper eating at home. I Chinese restraunt that we eat at sometimes has a buffet and the price is $9.95 so that times 4 is around forty dollars so that buys a bit a of groceries. There are some things that you just have to go out for like KFC chicken, we've tried many recipies and still can't perfect the taste.

stick to the dollar menus if you're trying to save a bit

make spaghetti at home if you're really trying to save

of course if you're pampered and/or sedentary you'll have to whine about nutrition and calories, for the vast majority it isn't a problem

And that's always a good way for your waiter to remember you the next time you come back and see to it that you get the wonderful service that someone who spends nothing usually gets. Just in case you're wondering why your server seems to never be around.

Here's another trick--don't eat anything, they make money on that food too. Or buy a beer at happy hour and engorge yourself on five pounds of cocktail weenies and nachos. They love that.

And don't ever tip, you save money there too.

Eating at home is cheaper for us 'cause I'm a great cook and we shop smart yet to our preferences.

Eating out is cheaper if you have a tendency to cook a lot of abalone while at home.
